Stop Lowering the Bar Just Because Things Are Not Working Yet
There is a move most people make when things are not going the way they planned. They do not announce it. They do not even fully notice it. They just quietly adjust what they were going for, settle for something easier, and call it being realistic.
This week’s Monday Motivation, Bob the Psychic names that move for what it is. And he is not interested in letting you get away with it.
The bar is not the problem
When something is not working, the easiest explanation is that you aimed too high. So you bring the bar down. And then down again. And suddenly things start happening around you — but they are not the right things. They are just the things that showed up when you stopped being specific about what you actually wanted.
My message this week is to stay meticulous. Know exactly what you are building toward. Do not trade precision for motion just because moving feels better than waiting.
Adjusting is not the same as abandoning. You can recalibrate without gutting the standard entirely. The version of the goal that challenges you is almost always the right one to keep.
What a roadblock is actually telling you
Here is where this week’s Monday Motivation gets specific. Not every obstacle means stop. Most of the time, the places where you hit resistance are exactly where the growth is happening.
Bob The Psychic makes a distinction worth holding onto. There is the kind of discomfort that means you are on the wrong path, and there is the kind that means you are on the right one but it is hard. The second kind is not a reason to turn around. It is a reason to pay attention.
He puts it plainly: if everything always came easily, there would be no challenge. No challenge means no growth. And no growth means you are standing exactly where you were a year ago.
The roadblock you have been staring at might be the lesson you came here to learn. Poking through it instead of retreating is often the whole point.
Boundaries that actually work
The other side of this week’s message is about what you let in while you are holding your standard. Bob talks about boundaries, not the kind that are so rigid nothing gets through, and not the kind that collapse the moment someone pushes.
The standard you hold for yourself has to extend to what you allow around you. Letting people run roughshod over you while you are trying to build something is its own kind of lowering the bar. You do not have to be inflexible. But you do have to be careful.
The goal is to know the difference between someone who is challenging you productively and someone who is just making things harder for no good reason. That distinction matters this week.
The thing you have been putting off
Bob ends this week’s Monday Motivation with something direct. If there is something in your life — a business move, a creative risk, a decision you have been circling — and you keep talking yourself out of it, he is asking you to reconsider.
Not every risk pays off. But the ones you never take definitely do not. And the return that comes from putting yourself out there, even imperfectly, is almost always bigger than the comfort of staying put.
Watch this week’s Monday Motivation and notice where you have been quietly moving the bar.
